Waitrose Recalls Chocolate Mini Cupcakes Over Undisclosed Walnuts

by Krystal

Waitrose has issued an urgent recall of its chocolate mini cupcakes after it was discovered that some packages contained undisclosed walnuts. The pack of nine own-brand cupcakes, priced at £3.25, poses a significant health risk for individuals with a walnut allergy, according to the Food Standards Authority (FSA).

The recall was prompted by a packaging error that resulted in some packets mistakenly containing coffee and walnut cupcakes instead of chocolate mini cupcakes. The supermarket has since removed the affected products from its shelves.

A Waitrose spokesperson apologized for the error, stating, “We’re recalling this product as a precaution due to the presence of undisclosed walnuts. The wrong cupcakes were mistakenly packed, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. Customers will receive a full refund.”

The FSA advised, “If you have bought any of the affected products and have a walnut allergy, do not consume them. Instead, return the product to the store for a full refund.”

Tree nut allergies, including those to walnuts, are more common in older children and adults than in infants. According to the NHS, tree nuts include almonds, Brazil nuts, cashew nuts, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pistachios, and walnuts.

Under Natasha’s Law, enacted in April 2021, all key allergens, including nuts, must be listed on pre-packaged foods. Symptoms of a nut allergy typically appear shortly after consumption and can include rash, swelling of the lips or eyes, itching, nausea, and vomiting. Severe reactions, although less common, may involve difficulty breathing, throat swelling, fainting, or dizziness, and require immediate medical attention.

The NHS advises calling 999 if any severe allergic reaction symptoms occur, such as swelling of the lips, mouth, throat, or tongue, difficulty breathing, tightness in the throat, blue or pale skin, sudden confusion, or unconsciousness.

Customers with affected products are urged to return them to Waitrose for a full refund and to seek medical advice if they experience any adverse reactions.
